Case Study · American University in Cairo · July 2026
Four days.
Twenty-one founders.
Five products.
None of them had run a business before. All five ventures are still online.
The starting point
Twenty-one young people who had never run anything.
Every participant arrived at the American University in Cairo with no prior business experience and no formal understanding of how a business works. None had met most of the people they would spend the week with.
What we were testing was whether a structured venture-building method used with adult founders could be delivered to teenagers without dilution, and still produce evidence-backed outcomes inside a single week.
Ninety-six hours later, all five teams had a validated problem, a working product a stranger could open, and a pitch delivered to a live panel. Nothing was pre-prepared. Nothing carried over from a previous cohort.
The constraint was never capability. It was whether anyone had ever given them a method and expected them to use it properly.

The four days
What they actually did.
Every stage produced an artefact. Nothing was theoretical. Every claim made without a source carried a penalty.

01 · Day 1
Ideate
Teams form from strangers, find a problem worth solving and commit to an idea.

02 · Day 2
Validate
Simulated customer conversations on the platform, then real ones in the city.

03 · Day 3
Build
Every team builds a working product with AI, by describing what it should do.

04 · Day 4
Pitch
Decks built around the evidence gathered, not the strength of the idea.

05 · Day 4
Panel
Live judging across the four ProofScaling dimensions. 500 points on the table.
The output
Five ventures. Five real problems.
Not one problem was invented in the room. Every one came from a real conversation with a real person. Two teams changed direction mid-week because the evidence told them to.
- Magashi
Noir Essence
Affordable fragrance for teenagers. Six products, working checkout, admin dashboard - built in four days.
Problem
Affordable fragrance for teenagers priced out of luxury scent.
Evidence
11 interviews. 7 of 11 preferred lower-cost alternatives. All 11 gave a price range of 500-1,000 EGP. Target audience revised from 13+ to 15+ on the evidence.
What they built
A live storefront with a six-product collection, working checkout and an admin dashboard.
- TripWise
TripWise
AI-assisted travel planner. Seven features added on interview evidence - not on instinct.
Problem
One travel app that connects everything, instead of switching between six.
Evidence
66.7% had fallen for a tourist trap. 75% had missed an experience they wanted. Feature set expanded from two to seven after interviews.
What they built
A live AI-assisted travel planner. Feature set expanded from two to seven after interviews.
- Prestige
YouthTalent
Five-part service model for underprivileged youth. A skill-sharing exchange that requires no cash.
Problem
Access to equipment, facilities and coaching for underprivileged young people.
Evidence
Interviews plus survey responses, triangulated against published reporting on the cost of hobby participation in Egypt.
What they built
A five-part service model at 750 EGP per month, including a skill-sharing exchange requiring no cash.
- LaunchPad
LaunchPad
Six-part platform for teen founders - learning, templates, community, suppliers, marketplace and competitions.
Problem
One trusted platform for teenagers trying to start a business.
Evidence
33 conversations across three stakeholder groups: 20 students, 5 teachers and 8 parents.
What they built
A six-part platform covering learning, templates, community, verified suppliers, marketplace and competitions.
- Innovators
Scholarship Access
AI-powered scholarship matching with built-in translation and a tracking dashboard.
Problem
AI matching for students who miss scholarships they are eligible for.
Evidence
Over 10 interviews. 60% skip scholarships they are eligible for. 90% struggle to find the right ones. 75% face language barriers.
What they built
AI-powered matching, an application mentor, built-in translation and a tracking dashboard.

On the platform
Every step inside Startopia Challengers.
Participants didn't just build in the room - every phase of the venture was completed on the platform. Problem discovery, customer interview practice with AI personas, solution validation and live leaderboard rankings.

From the sessions
Four days in the room.

What this showed
The four things we learned.
Teenagers will change direction when the evidence says so.
Two of five teams pivoted mid-week after customer conversations contradicted their assumption. Neither change came from a coach.
Building is no longer the bottleneck.
All five teams shipped a working product inside four days. None arrived with prior coding experience.
Simulation transfers to the real thing.
More than 100 real customer conversations followed practice runs on the platform. Rehearsal removed the fear; the real version produced the evidence.
Evidence, not enthusiasm, decided the result.
Judging ran on the four ProofScaling dimensions plus a panel score, 500 points total. Claims without a source cost points.
Capability built
Skills that transfer to any path they take.
Each of these is a founder skill. None of them is taught by describing it. They were built by doing the work under a real deadline.
Customer discovery
All participants built and ran an interview script to Mom Test principles, and could distinguish a leading question from a clean one.
Structured decision-making
Teams scored solution options against criteria and discarded ideas they liked in order to protect focus.
Building and testing
Every team shipped a working product and revised it on observed user behaviour rather than preference.
Commercial communication
Every team produced an investor-facing deck and delivered a timed pitch under questioning from a live panel.
Working with strangers
Teams formed on day one from people who had not met, agreed four roles and a decision-making rule, and held together for four days.
Problem identification
Participants moved from proposing solutions to interrogating problems, and could articulate the difference by day two.
From the room.
Thank you so much Louis, you've taught me soooo much. If it weren't for you I probably wouldn't have come today, the last day, because you didn't just teach me about business but you taught me to grow up. Just so you know, I'm SO starting my own business.
Thank you Mr Louie for making this bootcamp such a fun and memorable experience. Although I was initially worried that I'd be bored in this program, after the first five minutes of the presentation I knew this will be incredible. I really appreciate the opportunity this business provides for younger people to use technology for our goals.
Mr Louie, you have been an amazing teacher this bootcamp. You explain really well and the lessons would be boring with any other teacher.
Thank you for making this bootcamp a memorable experience and for giving us all you had. We learned a lot from you. Thank you for believing in our ideas and constantly encouraging us.
Thank you for being such a cool mentor. The last few days have been incredibly delightful. I'll 100% remember everything I've learned this week, and tell everyone about the coolest summer bootcamp ever.
The course is very informative. I learned many new things. Thank you for teaching us this valuable information.
